Pizza or Tacos Opinion Writing Worksheets (Differentiated K–3)

Opinion writing is a foundational writing skill in the early grades. Students learn how to clearly state what they think, support their opinion with reasons, and wrap up their writing with a conclusion. The best way to build these skills is with prompts that feel fun, familiar, and easy to talk about—like food!

This Pizza vs Tacos opinion writing worksheet set gives students a high-interest choice and simple planning support. Students choose their favorite and explain why using reasons they can understand and describe. To make differentiation easy, this printable includes three levels for grades K–3.

What’s included (3 versions)

Version A: Kindergarten (guided sentence frames)

Students choose pizza or tacos, check a few reason boxes, and complete sentence starters such as “I like ___ because ___.” This is a great fit for early writers working on complete sentences and handwriting stamina.

Version B: Grade 1–2 (structured graphic organizer)

Students write an opinion, give at least two reasons, and finish with a conclusion. The labeled lines help students organize their thinking and build paragraph structure.

Version C: Grade 2–3 (paragraph writing page)

This version provides more space for students to expand their ideas and add details. Students still get planning support through the reason checkboxes, but they’re able to write a longer response.

How to use this in the classroom

  1. Start with a quick discussion: Which do you like better—pizza or tacos?

  2. Have students choose one and check two reason boxes to plan.

  3. Encourage students to say their ideas out loud before writing.

  4. Remind writers to end with a conclusion sentence like “That is why I think ___ is better.”

Helpful sentence starters (optional)

  • I like ___ because ___.

  • Another reason is ___.

  • For example, ___.

  • In conclusion, ___.

  • That is why ___ is my favorite.
