Place Value Worksheets for Elementary

Understanding a number’s place value is one of the most important early steps in building strong number sense. It forms the foundation for nearly every math skill students will encounter from 1st grade through high school.

At Superthink, we’ve created a collection of free place value worksheets that help students develop a clear and lasting understanding of place value using visual tools, fun themes, and lots of practice opportunities. Whether your learners are just getting started with 2-digit numbers or rounding large numbers to the nearest tenth, our worksheets are designed to support every level of growth.

Place Value Skills by Grade Level

Here’s how place value skills typically progress throughout the elementary grades:

Kindergarten – 1st Grade
Students begin exploring teen numbers, learning to count forward, and recognizing how digit values change depending on the position of a digit. They use place value blocks and number charts to explore ones places, tens, and 2-digit numbers. Understanding that 14 is “1 ten and 4 ones” lays the groundwork for the decimal system and number system.

2nd Grade
Learners deepen their skills by identifying the specific value of a digit in the hundreds place, reading and writing numbers in standard form, and comparing whole numbers. Worksheets like Ten More, Ten Less and 100 More, 100 Less help strengthen fluency with larger numbers through repeated place value practice.

3rd Grade – 4th Grade
Students extend their thinking to the thousands place and beyond. They begin rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand and explaining the value of the underlined digit in a given number. These concepts are key to understanding future math concepts like estimation, regrouping, and multiplication with 3-digit place value and 4-digit numbers.

5th Grade and Beyond
As decimals are introduced, students use the same place value concept to understand tenths, hundredths, and beyond. They practice identifying the value of the digit in the nearest tenth, write decimals in standard form, and apply their skills to real-world problems involving money, measurement, and data.

Place Value in the Real World

Place value pops up all around us. It tells us that $5.50 is more than $5.05 at the store, that 75.3 pounds on the scale means just three-tenths of a pound over 75, and that sinking eight of ten free throws gives a shooting average of 0.80. It lets us read a video-game high score of 245,680 correctly, understand a weather report showing 1.2 inches of rain, and decide whether milk priced at $3.49 is a better deal than $3.79. In short, knowing what each digit is worth turns everyday numbers into clear, useful information.
